Responsibilities

The Paramedic is a member of the Emergency Department team delivering care to patients with varying degrees of acute illness or injury. This role involves patient sorting, information gathering, and intervention under the supervision of an Emergency Department physician and registered nurse. The Paramedic will interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members while maintaining emergency care standards within Ohio State Law.

• Assists with patient assessment by gathering information.
• Provides instruction to patients and families.
• Documents patient information and care rendered.
• Communicates patient information to the healthcare team.
• Performs life-saving or limb-saving measures.
• Recognizes cardiac dysrhythmias and performs ACLS interventions.
• Intubates patients under direct physician supervision.
• Delivers care as directed, including comfort measures, pain control (non-medication), emotional support, and general information.
• Inserts straight catheters for urine samples or residual urine measurement.
• Inserts indwelling Foley catheters.
• Performs 12-lead EKGs with appropriate labeling.
• Initiates cardiac monitoring and IV/IO infusions (manual or via infusion device) or saline locks.
• Inserts nasogastric or orogastric tubes.
• Prepares wounds for suturing, assists with suturing, and cleanses/dresses wounds.
• Applies splints, slings, ace wraps, air casts, C-collars, soft casts, knee/shoulder immobilizers, and clavicle straps.
• Initiates aerosol treatments per physician order.
• Applies oxygen via non-rebreather, mask, nasal cannula, or BVM as needed.
• Assists with soft or Tuff Cuff restraints.
• Initiates seizure precautions.
• Measures vital signs, including orthostatic vitals.
• Obtains specimens for lab testing (blood, urine, sputum, RSV, throat swab, wound culture).
• Performs ISTAT procedures and daily QA.
• Assists with pelvic/vaginal exams (female Paramedics) and labels specimens appropriately.
• Performs fingerstick blood sugar tests.
• Assists with lumbar punctures.
• Conducts visual acuity tests and eye/ear irrigation.
• Performs wound irrigation (manual and pulse-evac).
• Sets up sterile equipment and supplies for procedures.
• Serves as a trauma/stroke team member.
• Maintains unit by stocking equipment, linen, and supplies; keeps patient care areas clean and organized.
• Tags non-functioning equipment for repair and completes work orders.
• Ensures safety for co-workers, patients, and visitors.
• Charges for equipment and supplies.
• Assists with ordering supplies if designated.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited paramedic training program.
• Current certification as an EMT-Paramedic from the State of Ohio; National Registry preferred.
• Minimum of one year’s experience in pre-hospital emergency care.
• Current certifications in BLS and ACLS; PALS required within one year of employment.
• Experience working with acutely ill patients, including emergency situations.
• Knowledgeable of clinical equipment (refer to unit-specific competency base orientation).
• Ability to read, write, and perform complex arithmetic and financial applications.
