About the Role

The Paramedic provides care and support to patients in the Emergency Department, including transportation, nutritional support, routine hygienic care, selective respiratory procedures, dressing applications/changes, vital signs, selective treatments, equipment retrieval, and basic support of activities of daily living (ADLs).

Responsibilities

  • Collects and conveys information to RN and physician regarding patient health status throughout their Emergency Department visit.
  • Communicates patient information verbally and in writing to the RN for care plan development and modification.
  • Explains procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation and ease apprehension.
  • Keeps patients informed of their treatment plan and status during their stay.
  • Performs specialized care within scope of practice under the supervision of an Emergency Department Registered Nurse.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining effective patient flow for both emergency and outpatient departments.
  • Assists patients with gowning, takes and records vital signs, and measures input/output.
  • Attaches oxygen, oxygen saturation monitors, and cardiac monitors as needed.
  • Initiates lifesaving measures such as airway management, ventilation, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, fracture stabilization, and cervical spine alignment.
  • Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at the emergency department entrance.
  • Transports patients to and from vehicles and within the Emergency Department as directed.
  • Cleans and dresses wounds, sets up and assists with procedures as directed.
  • Performs phlebotomy, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs, and application of splints.
  • Inserts, monitors, and discontinues non-medicated IV catheters in adults and pediatric patients and documents as required.
  • Assists in department maintenance by reporting defective equipment, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, and transporting supplies.
  • Administers limited medications as ordered by the attending physician, per the "Paramedic Medication Administration List," upon successful completion of the "ED Paramedic Pharmacology Exam."
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • State-certified EMT-P course completion.
  • EMT-P Certification, State of Indiana.
  • Competencies for routine clinical tests and procedures must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • ACLS and PALS must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association) or ENPC.
  • Preferred: One (1) year of experience working as a paramedic.
  • Preferred: High School diploma or GED.
