Paramedic Emergency Department

About the Role

This position is responsible for patient care in the emergency department as assigned under the medical direction of the base hospital EMS Medical Director. The role assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional paramedic practice standards. It is accountable for the quality of patient services delivered by self or others under their direction, utilizing specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to assess data and provide care appropriate to patients' physical and developmental age.

About the Facility

Banner Boswell Medical Center, located in Sun City, AZ, has been a cornerstone of community health for over 40 years, specializing in diseases of the elderly. The Emergency Department (ED) treats over 48,000 patients annually and is a Level 4 Trauma Center. The ED consists of 42 licensed beds and focuses on delivering exceptional patient experiences through robust throughput measures. The facility is nationally recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of Arizona’s Best Hospitals and holds accreditations such as NIHSS Stroke Gold Elite Plus, Chest Pain, and Pediatric Preparedness.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates acuity level of patients and ensures appropriate matching of patient care needs to unit and hospital resources.
• Assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets information to identify patient requirements.
• Performs basic patient care within scope of training: positioning, transportation, phlebotomy, ECGs, and maintenance of spinal precautions.
• Administers or monitors medications as ordered by a physician, limited to those approved for paramedics in the state of practice.
• Assists in patient transfer using proper body mechanics and techniques.
• Starts peripheral intravenous lines, including external jugular lines, and manages fluid administration per physician order.
• Performs cardiovascular monitoring and management within scope of training.
• Manages airway care, including oxygen administration, tracheal suctioning, assisting with ventilation, and monitoring end-tidal CO2 and pulse-ox.
• Actively participates in the resuscitation of critical patients as assigned.
• Observes and monitors patients through the diagnostic phase of treatment.
• Performs other duties as assigned based on competency and training.
• Recognizes changes in patient status and notifies the charge nurse, primary nurse, or physician.
• Documents assessments, patient progress, and discharge plans in accordance with unit guidelines.
• Interacts with staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts to coordinate patient care.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Current and valid Paramedic certification or license within the state of practice.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification; PALS required if working with pediatric populations.
• Moderate experience typically gained through 2-4 years of relevant work experience or 12-18 months in an educational program.

Preferred Qualifications

• FP-C or CCT-P Certification if working in ICU, Burn, or CVCU.
• Additional related education and/or experience.

Schedule

This is a full-time mid-shift position with hours from 12 PM to 12 AM, three shifts per week, including weekends and holiday rotations. The role offers a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and access to a self-scheduling tool.
