General Summary

The Paramedic is responsible for providing both basic and advanced life support, including comprehensive patient assessment, invasive airway management, cardiac monitoring and administration of medications.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assesses and reassesses patient’s condition and provides rescue interventions appropriately under protocol established by the Medical Director when direct Medical Control is unavailable.
  • Uses critical thinking skills when assessing patient’s needs and planning care.
  • Delegates patient care tasks to EMT's and First Responders within their scope of duties and evaluates their performance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in skills such as Cardiac Monitoring with 4 lead and 12 lead, Arrhythmia Interpretation, Transcutaneous Pacing, Defibrillation, Capnography, Endotracheal, Intubation, King Airway Insertion, LMA, Needle Decompression, C-PAP, VAD, IV, Intraosseous Insertion, Defibrillation, Drug Calculations, Medication administration and RSI.
  • Collaborates effectively with other healthcare team members and emergency service providers to coordinate patient care.
  • Efficiently assesses Trauma Scenes and activates the Trauma Team appropriately.
  • Follows infection control procedures and utilizes safe patient handling and movement techniques.
  • Documents appropriately and accurately on MARF form.
  • Communicates well with other departments and other emergency services.

Education

  • High School education or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of Missouri State approved EMT-P course required.
  • One year EMT-P experience preferred.

Certification/License

  • Current Missouri EMT-P license required.
  • BLS, ACLS, PHTLS and PALS certifications required.
  • (PHTLS and Class E driver’s license must be obtained within six months of hire.)

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Considerable mental concentration required.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required.
  • Standing, walking, sitting, lifting (50 lbs), turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, reaching.
  • Driving for extended periods of time.
  • Dealing with traumatic and stressful situations.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times.
    • Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids.
    • Minimal physical discomfort.
