About the role
The United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Virginia seeks a Paralegal Specialist to join our team. This position supports the litigation efforts of the office.
Responsibilities
- Perform substantive research, evaluation, and analysis of specialized legal topics and points of law.
- Organize and prepare research material, determine pertinent information, reconcile conflicting facts, identify and gather additional information, and make sound interpretations.
- Create indices of legal and administrative material.
- Draft initial and administrative briefs, motions, oppositions to defense motions, and correspondence for review.
- Obtain and analyze financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay.
- Draft and assist in the preparation of requests for discovery.
- Organize data and develop trial exhibits such as statistical charts, graphs, and timelines to be presented in court as corroborative and summary evidence.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship or Nationality.
- Pre-employment adjudication including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment subject to a favorable background investigation.
- Registration for Selective Service, if applicable.
- Time-in-grade requirement within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
Qualifications
- GS-9: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level, or a combination of education and experience.
- Specialized Experience: Experience performing paralegal or legal work in financial litigation demonstrating a basic knowledge of legal research and interpretation of legal decisions.
- Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in law, criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field.
