About the role
The role combines paralegal and administrative responsibilities and provides support to Markel's insurance legal team, focusing on regulatory, compliance, corporate, and transactional matters.
Responsibilities
- Provide broad legal and administrative support to in-house attorneys supporting Markel's insurance operations, with a primary focus on regulatory, compliance, corporate, and transactional matters, excluding litigation.
- Prepare and assist with regulatory filings, including insurance holding company filings, state regulatory submissions, licensing-related filings, and other corporate regulatory documentation.
- Perform internet-based factual and legal research and assist with special research projects.
- Track legislative and regulatory developments impacting the property and casualty insurance industry and assist in communicating relevant changes to attorneys and business partners.
- Maintain electronic filing systems and legal records to ensure documents are accurate, organized, and readily accessible.
- Interface with internal business partners, including Underwriting, Finance, Tax, Treasury, Compliance, and other departments, and serve as a liaison between the Legal Department and the rest of the company.
- Aid in coordinating signatures, notarizations, and execution of legal and regulatory documents.
- Maintain regulatory calendars and assist with tracking filing deadlines and reporting obligations.
- Support other legal operations, regulatory, and compliance initiatives as needed.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, certification from an ABA-approved paralegal program, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Work Experience / Skills: At least five years of in-house paralegal experience or other relevant legal, regulatory, or compliance experience.
- Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong grammar, proofreading, and organizational abilities; exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines; self-motivated, resourceful, and able to work independently while thriving in a collaborative team environment; strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships across departments and levels of the organization; demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and SharePoint; experience working with document management systems, legal operations tools, or workflow management systems is a plus; Notary Public designation is a plus; Prior insurance, regulatory, compliance, or financial services experience preferred, but not required.

Pay
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Paralegal position is $32 - $44/hr with 12% incentive.
