Possession of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following:

  • Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education;
  • Possession of an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
  • Passing a rigorous assessment that demonstrates the knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting State and Federal requirements.

Applicants may be exempt from taking the multiple choice examination if they provide college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject areas of English and Math courses with a grade of "C" or better. Transcripts must be submitted with application. If an applicant does not possess enough units to be exempt, they must attach to their application a letter requesting an examination date. Applicants will not be able to submit their application without attaching either transcripts or a letter requesting an examination date.

Requirements

  • Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance.
  • Submit to a general tuberculosis examination.
  • Be fingerprinted.
  • Complete a pre-placement physical examination.
  • Show proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Pass a drug test (District has a drug-free workplace policy).
  • Successfully pass all examination parts pertaining to the classification to attain placement on the eligibility list.

    • Associate’s Degree: $500/year (prorated by FTE).
    • Bachelor’s Degree: $1,500/year.

    • Special Education Paraeducators: $500/year (prorated by FTE).
  • Health Insurance: Employees working 5+ hours/day (25+ hours/week) receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision, and employee or family dental coverage.
  • Holidays: 16 paid holidays for twelve-month employees (must be in paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday).
  • Longevity Pay: Increments added to base pay effective July 1 after completing:
    • 9 years: 3.5%
    • 14 years: 7.123%
    • 19 years: 12.158%
    • 24 years: 16.644%
    • 29 years: 21.310%
    • 34 years: 26.162%
    • 39 years: 31.209%
    • 44 years: 36.457%
    • 49 years: 41.915%
    • 54 years: 47.592%
    • 59 years: 53.495%
  • Professional Growth: After one year of service, employees may earn additional salary increments for continuing education.
  • Retirement: Membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Federal Social Security program (contributions shared by District and employee). Employees working less than half-time have full retirement coverage under Social Security.
  • Shift Differential: 3.75% above day rate for shifts where more than 4 hours fall between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. (prorated by months paid per year).
  • Sick Leave: 12 days/year for full-time twelve-month employees (accumulates without limit; prorated for less-than-twelve-month employees).
  • Vacation: 12 days/year for full-time twelve-month employees (increases after 5 years; prorated for less-than-twelve-month employees).
  • Veterans Preference: Preference points added to passing scores for open examinations on entry-level classifications.

Process

  • Eligibility List: Candidates who pass all phases are ranked by total examination score; list is valid for six months.
  • Certification: Top three ranked candidates (including ties) are submitted to the appointing authority for selection.
  • Probationary Period: Initial appointment includes a probationary period not to exceed six months or 130 days of paid service (includes days worked, approved vacation, and designated holidays).
