Position Hours and Pay

This position is for 6.75 hours per day at 146 days per year. 7 hours per day for the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed.

Required Training

  • Person hired for this position must also complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire.
  • Renewal of Right Response certification must be completed annually prior to expiration date.
  • Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Paraeducator Certificate of the state mandated Paraeducator Certificate Program per State requirements.
  • Paraeducator Certificate Program is dependent upon State funding.

Federal Minimum Employment Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age;
  • Hold high school diploma or its equivalent;
  • One of the following:
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment;
    • AA degree or higher;
    • Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education;
    • Completed registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries;
    • Successfully completed The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program
  • You may provide unofficial transcripts in your application but will be required to provide official ones upon hire. Not providing required documents could significantly delay your official hire. Please contact HR with questions.

Health Requirements

  • TB (Tuberculosis) Testing - Must Provide Proof of passing TB (tuberculosis) test PRIOR to official hire!
  • MMR Vaccine Required

General Summary

This position's responsibilities are to assist certificated staff in a variety of activities for preschool special education students, including instructing students individually or in small groups, and supervising student behavior and supervising student activities as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Provides instruction and other assistance to special needs preschool students ages 3 to 5 in a partially self-contained/partially integrated program.
  • Works with students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote student understanding of materials presented.
  • Communicates with instructor and program specialists concerning individual student progress; adjusts methods to meet the needs of a wide variety of students.

Other Functions

  • Alerts qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Prepares, duplicates, collates and distributes materials; operates a variety of office equipment.
  • Serves on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Maintains log of students transportation information, according to program requirements.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions.
  • May have flexible hours to allow employee to participate in family and/or community activities related to program objectives.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Director for Special Services; receives guidance from assigned certificated staff.

Mental Demands

  • Frequent interruptions;
  • May be required to shift task and priorities;
  • Required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors;
  • Required to deal with a wide range of physical and emotional disabilities;
  • May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

Physical Demands

  • Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students;
  • Exposed to student noise levels;
  • Required to lift students weighing up to fifty (50), move and position students and equipment;
  • Playground supervision and bus loading requires working outdoors in inclement weather;
  • Required to attend to students' personal hygiene;
  • May be exposed to biting behavior;
  • May need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds;
  • Required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, with experience working with preschool students and special needs students preferred.
