About the role
This is a one-on-one paraeducator position supporting students with special needs. The role operates 6.5 hours per day, 9 months per year, under Fair Labor Standards Act status: Non-Exempt.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model for students and practice expected behaviors
- Work flexibly and cooperatively with certificated staff to develop and evaluate student learning goals
- Independently oversee student behavior and assist during class activities
- Assist with classroom activities or provide instruction in academic subjects, basic life skills, social skills, and other assigned areas
- Produce and assemble teaching materials as directed
- Assist with data entry, record keeping, and grading/correcting papers and homework
- Oversee assigned students in school facilities, playgrounds, cafeterias, and on field trips
- Attend training meetings to expand expertise in supporting students with special needs
- Collect and share progress data using technology to track IEP goals
- Lead small groups or individualized instruction in reading, writing, math, and social/behavioral skills
- Support students in general education classrooms, adjusting assignments and collaborating with general education teachers
- Communicate clearly with special education staff regarding student behavior, progress, and needs
- Implement behavior support plans and staff feedback for individual students
- Perform other duties as assigned by administrators aligned with job classification
Requirements
- Documentation verifying a high school diploma or GED
- One of the following:
- Official transcripts verifying an Associate's degree (90 quarter, 60 semester) OR
- 72 quarter or 48 semester credits from an accredited institution OR
- ETS ParaPro Assessment result of 461 or higher
Qualifications
- One year of related experience working with children in an educational setting preferred
- Successful experience as part of an educational team preferred
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Excellent problem solving, analytical, and conflict resolution skills
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to effectively communicate with and appreciate individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds
- Ability to learn and use computers, keyboards, and adaptive technologies
- Ability to implement educational programs and manage student behavior with teacher direction
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to be flexible with assigned tasks and schedules
Other Requirements
- Ability to lift and move students as required by the job
- Ability to physically restrain a child of the size required by the position
- Ability to independently and safely escort students around the school building and grounds
- Ability to observe student behavior visually and auditorily
- Regular attendance to meet program requirements
Benefits/Compensation
- Salary & Time Off: New employees start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. Employees with verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Educational Service Districts may receive experience credit toward salary placement. Paid holidays and paid time off (sick, vacation, personal, and bereavement leave) are provided as detailed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (VAESP CBA).
- Benefits: Employees anticipated to work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits.
- Retirement: Eligibility for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) based on position FTE.
