About the Role

The Paraeducator II assists (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of students in assigned areas of study. This role relieves teachers of routine clerical tasks and provides a variety of responsible instructional support activities to enhance the educational environment within assigned programs. This position is distinguished from Paraeducator I by its focus on assisting students in specialized learning programs, including opportunity classes, programs for secondary students that have been retained, academic programs addressing academic deficiencies, specialized tutoring, or other programs designed to assist students with specialized learning needs and/or those performing below grade level expectations.

This position supports the Extended Day Kinder Program at Luiseno School.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision and instruction of students under direct supervision.
  • Relieve teachers of routine clerical tasks.
  • Provide instructional support activities to enhance the educational environment.
  • Support students in specialized learning programs, including but not limited to:
    • Opportunity classes.
    • Programs for secondary students that have been retained.
    • Academic programs designed to address academic deficiencies for students attending Intersession/summer school programs.
    • Specialized tutoring or instruction in preparation for assessments to determine mastery of grade-level standards.
    • Other programs designed to assist students with specialized learning needs or those performing below grade-level expectations.
  • Perform basic clerical functions and arithmetic calculations.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Provide for the special health care needs of students.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Rapidly learn methods and materials used in various instructional situations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior job-related experience, paid or volunteer, with school-age children.
  • Skills to use English in both written and verbal form, with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Principles of child development.
    • Instructional processes.
    • General purposes and goals of public education.
    • Student testing and testing procedures.
  • Abilities to:
    • Understand and address students with special needs.
    • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
    • Meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Significant physical abilities including:
    • Stooping/crouching.
    • Reaching/handling.
    • Talking/hearing conversations.
    • Near/far visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.

Pay

Pay Range: $18.882 - $24.852 per hour (Maximum achieved over 8 annual steps).

Schedule

  • 3 hours per day, 182 days per year.
  • Shift: 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
  • Employment Type: Part Time

Additional Information for Current CSEA Employees

  • Unit members seeking a voluntary lateral transfer (same job title) must be a permanent employee for at least two years prior to the date of the posted vacancy.
  • Unit members granted a voluntary lateral transfer must wait one year from the date of transfer before applying for another voluntary lateral transfer (same job title).
  • Unit members currently serving a probationary period (including promotional probation) are not eligible for a voluntary lateral transfer (same job title).
  • If three or more eligible unit members apply, all other candidates will be excluded from the interview process.
  • Voluntary lateral transfers may be denied based on poor job performance, including:
    • An overall "Needs to Improve" or "Unsatisfactory" rating on the most recent performance evaluation.
    • Two or more "N"s and/or one or more "U"s on the most recent evaluation.
    • Unjustified excessive absenteeism (without an approved leave).
    • Disciplinary actions within one year prior to the date of the posted vacancy.
  • When fewer than three eligible lateral transfer applications are submitted, interview priority will be given to current employees in the same job family.

Offer of employment is conditional pending pre-employment physical, fingerprints, negative drug screen, and TB test.
