About the Program
John F. Kennedy School, Special Education. Focus on development of independent life skills, self help, functional academics, communication, and positive social interactions for students between 5 and 22 years of age with severe to extreme behavioral disabilities.
Job Summary
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of severely handicapped students who may have extreme behavioral issues in a classroom. Provide direct instruction, monitor, and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; assist students in developing various self-help, behavior, social and community skills.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Possess SCOE Para Educator Proficiency Certificate or other qualifying document (NCLB/ESSA Certificate, transcripts showing a minimum of 48 college semester units or an Associate's Degree or higher)
Qualifications
- Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and at least two years experience, paid or voluntary, working with children/individuals with disabilities
- AND one of the following: possession of an Associate's degree or higher, at least 48 college semester units or pass the (ESSA) Every Student Succeeds Act exam
License & Other Requirements
- Complete approved SCOE Crisis Intervention Program within six (6) months of employment and maintain valid certification
- Some positions may require bilingual skills in a designated second language
- Some positions may require sign language skills
Benefits
A Benefit Entitlement for health, dental and vision coverage is available for positions that are at least 4 hours per day. The amount of the entitlement is based on the number of hours worked per day.
Pay & Schedule
- Pay Range: $28.49 - $35.08 Per Hour (Range 13, CSEA Classified Regular Salary Schedule). Initial salary placement restricted to a maximum of Step 2 ($30.10/hr.)
- 6 hours per day, 184 days/10 months

Testing Information
Applicants that MEET the Minimum Requirements and did not attach transcripts showing A.A. degree or higher, or at least 48 semester units, or did not submit a copy of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Exam, will receive an e-mail invitation to attend ESSA testing.
