Painter (Maintenance Technician - Painter)

Salary: $28.44/hour – depending on experience

About the Position

The Painter performs a variety of advanced technical and skilled duties including drywall patching/repair, carpentry repair/staining and prepping/painting for 9 library locations.

Responsibilities

• Fosters good working relationships with diverse people including staff, patrons, volunteers, and vendors. Accepts assignments from supervisor, manager, or other Library staff in a professional and timely manner.
• Prepares painting surface by cleaning, removing any paint or other covering, filling holes with appropriate material, repairing or replacing damaged drywall, and smoothing surface by sanding or scraping.
• Prepares painting area by removing or covering fixtures (switch and outlet covers, pictures), spreading drop cloths on floors and/or furniture, and covering surfaces such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper.
• Selects premixed paints or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning/drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors. Paints surfaces using brushes, spray guns, or paint rollers. May simulate wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.
• Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level.
• Cleans work area at the end of the workday and upon job completion, removing drop cloths, tape, and coverings. Cleans residual dust or paint spills.
• Restores work site by replacing covers and fixtures (switch and outlet covers, pictures, or other wall hangings).
• Fixes, replaces, and restores interior and exterior trim pieces. Applies varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and/or protect surfaces, trim, and fixtures.
• Determines materials needed to complete assigned work orders and purchases necessary supplies.
• Participates in vendor contract negotiations, monitors contract performance, and resolves vendor issues.
• Responds to 24-hour emergencies and performs emergency building or equipment repair as part of an emergency call list.
• Maintains a clean and safe vehicle, drives safely, wears a seat belt, and obeys all traffic rules.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent and three to five years of experience in patching/finishing drywall, surface preparation, and commercial painting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Utah driver license and a clean driving record.
• Availability to work occasional nights, weekends, and before or after Library hours.
• Experience working with vendors or suppliers on large jobs.
• General knowledge of building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, and facility repair.
• Knowledge of state and federal building codes, health codes, safety codes, fire codes, ADA, OSHA, and safety procedures.
• Working knowledge of computerized mechanical systems.
• Ability to perform routine record-keeping, exercise initiative and independent judgment, and react resourcefully under varying conditions.
• Ability to plan and schedule work priorities effectively, read and interpret building plans and specifications, and communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, agencies, vendors, contractors, and the public.
• Ability to move objects weighing up to 90 lbs and work in adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Spanish language and/or other non-English language skills.

Working Environment

Work is performed in a library environment. Subject to repetitive movement; standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects. Must be able to lift/carry up to 90 lbs and push/pull up to 300 lbs. Requires good hand mobility and coordination. May involve intermittent periods of inclement weather when working outside.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Early mornings, evenings, and weekends may be required. May require being on-call.

Pay

Starting Range Grade 16, Step 1 – $28.44/hour, depending on experience.
