About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Specialty Practice Manager, the Pain Management Nurse is responsible for providing direct patient care in conformity with recognized nursing procedures.

Responsibilities

Direct Clinical Care

  • Accurately documents patient's chief complaint, medical history, and vital signs and completes pertinent forms within the Electronic Medical Record in accordance with Best Practice Workflows.
  • Communicates all patient information to the CRNA.
  • Prepares, instructs, positions, and drapes the patient.
  • Performs phlebotomy and IV insertion as needed.
  • Assists in procedures such as dressing changes and injections using sterile techniques.
  • Provides patients with educational materials in collaboration with the CRNA.
  • Instructs patients about medications, diet, exercise, discharge instructions, care plan goals, and preventative guidelines specific to the diagnosis.
  • Prepares and administers medication as directed by the CRNA or as indicated in the patient record.
  • Ensures timely telephone assessments, including triage of appropriate care for patients with accurate documentation and prioritized scheduling.

Clinic

  • Provides clinical support for all CRNAs.
  • Assists CRNAs with procedures.
  • Prepares the procedure room with needed supplies, instruments, and equipment, and maintains the room in a clean manner.
  • Ensures CRNAs are on schedule, being mindful of emergencies and unexpected interruptions.
  • Prepares specimens and documentation for processing or transportation to the processing facility.
  • Communicates clinical education needs to the Specialty Practice Manager to optimize functional team capacity.
  • Works with the Practice Director and Specialty Practice Manager to improve and/or implement clinical workflows within the practice.
  • Works with Care Coordinators and Quality Management liaisons to help close identified patient care gaps, inspire clinical teams to strive for targeted quality goals, and link patients and their family members to resources for optimal care compliance.

Supply, Equipment & Medication Coordination

  • Supervises the maintenance of an inventory of supplies and equipment required to perform clinical services.
  • Ensures that emergency equipment is checked and functional, hazardous materials are stored, handled, and disposed of in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Cares for, cleans, and sterilizes equipment per instructions or established procedures.
  • Orders medical supplies as needed to keep exam rooms stocked.
  • Orders medications within hospital policy for refills and prescriptions.

Patient Access & Office Coordination

  • Answers the telephone, files, and retrieves records as needed.
  • Schedules patients for needed procedures or follow-up appointments.
  • Ensures efficient patient flow and provides timely assessment of patients presenting at the office.

Organizational Expectations

  • Attendance: Comes to work daily, on time, and completes scheduled shift.
  • HIPAA: Facilitates maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Internal Communication: Contributes to positive team performance and a culture of service excellence through effective communication, active listening, and respect.
  • Interpersonal Relationships: Maintains appropriate interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and visitors at all times; works as a team member with other departments.
  • Safety: Practices workplace safety daily.
  • Employee Engagement: Actively participates in all hospital Service Excellence initiatives and trainings.
  • Attends and participates in a minimum of 50% of department staff meetings and signs off on review of 100% of department staff meeting minutes.
  • Completes all required annual education on or before the due date.

Requirements

  • RN and BLS certification required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers.
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress.
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
  • Familiarity with computers and other business machines.
