Paid Internship (Multiple Divisions)

About the Role

The Mercer Vicinage is accepting resumes for paid internship opportunities for the Fall 2026 semester. The intern will perform a variety of clerical, administrative, supportive tasks, and customer service duties in connection with proceedings instituted before the Court. Interns may also assist with tasks such as data entry, filing, and making photocopies. The interns will gain broad insight and knowledge of the court system. Flexible schedules are available.

Responsibilities

• Assist with answering phones, returning phone calls, and receiving and distributing voicemails.
• Contact and follow-up with applicants, defendants, court users, and/or members of the public.
• Organize and scan paper files/filings by parties and upload scans into an electronic filing system.
• Perform special projects.
• Conduct research and analysis.
• Perform computer-related work.
• Collect and enter data.
• Provide customer service.
• Draft correspondences and memos.
• Observe client interviews and court proceedings.
• Attend community planning meetings.
• Assist staff and perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications

• Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree.
• For Criminal Pre-Trial Services or Probation divisions, applicants must have thirty credit hours from an accredited college pursuing a degree or certificate in Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related field.
• Unofficial College or University transcript must be included with the application.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $20.00. This position is limited to a maximum of 35 hours per week, not to exceed 944 hours in a fiscal year.

Schedule

Interns would be required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Availability to work for a minimum of 4 months is preferred. Hours and days worked are flexible but must be between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding State holidays.

Additional Information

Physical Ability: For some positions, applicants must have the ability to perform work requiring climbing and prolonged standing, stretching, bending, and reaching. The selected candidate must frequently lift and carry supplies weighing from 30 to 50 pounds and, occasionally, materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

Driver's License: Required only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US.

Special Note: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.

Residency Law: In accordance with the "New Jersey First Act," employees must establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey within one year of hire.

Internships may be available in the following divisions: Trial Court Administration, Civil, Criminal, Criminal Pre-Trial Services, Family, Finance, Information Technology, Municipal, Operations, Human Resources, Probation, and the Ombudsman Office.
