About the role
The emergency department at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is staffed 24/7 with board-certified physicians and advanced-level practitioners. The facility is certified as a Level IV Trauma Center by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Responsibilities
- Provides individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages.
- Administers nursing care guided by physician orders, unit protocols, and professional judgment.
- Communicates effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families, and other healthcare team members.
- Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues.
- Delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients' records.
- Works independently with limited direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, MercyOne policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.
- Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (e.g., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices).
- Initiates emergency support measures (e.g., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
- Complies with OSHA/JCAHO and other regulatory agency recommendations and guidelines.
- Assists with clerical duties (e.g., maintenance of charge, patient record, answering phones and call lights, processing physician orders).
- Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment.
- Provides orientation/education for staff, students, and other hospital and community organizations as requested.
- Supports and participates in departmental Performance Improvement projects.
Requirements
- Associate degree in nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current Iowa RN license.
- Operating Room experience preferred.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter - Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
