About the Role

Packing & Shipping Specialists carefully wrap and package outgoing products to prevent damage during storage and transportation. Specialists select appropriate packaging materials to protect product integrity and optimize the size and weight of shipped items, considering transportation methods, export regulations, and customer and carrier requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Package products to protect from damage during transportation and storage; examine shipments to ensure they meet customer requirements and comply with carrier requirements, export regulations, and customs documentation.
  • Ensure shipping documents are accurate and complete, and that all packages are adequately labeled.
  • Verify accuracy of orders and maintain accurate records of shipments; compare identifying information and counts, weights, and measurements against bills of lading, customer orders, or other records.
  • Receive, unwrap, inspect, and store incoming materials; accurately record counts, weights, condition, and storage locations for received items.
  • Utilize forklift, pallet jacks, dolly, and other material handling equipment to transport materials; may operate overhead or jib crane; may use forklift to load and/or unload goods on trucks (forklift certification required upon employment).
  • Complete appropriate paperwork in compliance with internal processes and quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized, safe work area.
  • Verify equipment is operating correctly and safely; perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance as appropriate.
  • Follow directions consistently and accept responsibility for actions and work product.
  • Comply with applicable manufacturing processes, work procedures, and supervisor instructions.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures; proactively identify job hazards and collaborate with leadership to minimize hazards and ensure employee safety.
  • May be required to drive company vehicles for receiving and/or delivering parts; expected to obey all city, state, and federal traffic and transport regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a warehouse role performing stocking, order picking, and/or packaging is required.
  • Forklift experience with a satisfactory record of safe operation is preferred.
  • Experience with export compliance and hazardous materials shipping is preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to read and accurately interpret a pick ticket and verify counts with 100% accuracy.
  • Attention to detail and demonstration of accurate counting, measurement, and associated recordkeeping.
  • Ability to accurately read and record measurements within a 1/4 inch increment.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills (English).
  • Consistently legible handwriting (English).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties.
  • Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently climb steps, stairs, or ladders.
  • Frequently bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel.
  • Accurately distinguish colors, letters, and numbers.
  • Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices.
  • Use hands and fingers to manually inspect and assess, lift, rotate, and wrap or otherwise package parts.
  • Visual ability to gauge distances, recognize and avoid obstacles to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.

Work is performed in a manufacturing warehouse environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee may be exposed to:

  • Moderate noise (generally).
  • Excessive noise, hearing protection required (occasionally).
  • Dust, smoke, fumes/vapors (occasionally).
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally).
  • Sharp instruments including box cutters, scissors, and other tools used in packaging/shipping.
  • Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment.
  • The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, and use of safety footwear may be required.
