Packing Lead

About the role

Oversee the weighing, packaging, and labeling of leafy greens products at the lowest possible cost while adhering to good manufacturing practices. Operate scales, packaging equipment, and palletize finished cases according to customer specifications.

Responsibilities

• Manage the flow of harvested lettuce through conveyor belts and scales into finished goods.
• Place cartons and lids onto production lines while keeping pace with machinery.
• Ensure labeling and lot/date coding correspond with the lettuce being harvested for the shift.
• Read scales and check case weights according to customer specifications.
• Maintain a flow of corrugated boxes to the filling stage in the packaging process.
• Stack finished corrugated cases onto wooden pallets.
• Lift and carry up to 30 lbs. safely.
• Ensure efficient operation of weighing equipment (Ishida scales).
• Set up production equipment at the start of the shift.
• Train and motivate department personnel.
• Supervise department personnel in a fair and consistent manner.
• Work overtime, weekends, or other shifts when required.
• Adjust equipment to optimize throughput and yield of the packing process.
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues and assist Maintenance in identifying problems to minimize downtime.
• Rotate teammates to different positions during the shift.
• Determine if product meets specifications and take corrective action as needed.
• Plan and manage time efficiently to meet goals while producing quality products.
• Perform sanitation and cleanup of all processing areas throughout the day.
• Enter and maintain production data and conduct or attend daily huddles.
• Perform daily light checks in the Green Houses as appropriate for the production line.
• Adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP and HACCP guidelines, and maintain sanitary conditions.
• Report any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety, food quality, or personnel safety.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to work in refrigerated environments for 8+ hour work periods.
• Ability to perform monotonous tasks efficiently over 8+ hour work periods without losing quality.
• Must be able to stand on concrete floors for long periods.
• Basic math and computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ year working in a fast-paced environment.
• Prior agriculture or greenhouse experience.
• Ability to write daily reports and correspondence.
• Works well in a group and independently; demonstrates self-motivation and initiative.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changes in policy, procedure, and technique.
• Strong listening and communication skills, especially with supervisors and coworkers.
• Ability to follow basic instructions and accept constructive criticism from managers while maintaining quality standards and production goals.

Pay

Starting rate: $21.00/hour
