About the role

The Packaging and Product Device Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and implementing packaging solutions that are a critical component of the organization’s Product Development process. This role also evaluates and improves existing packaging designs to enhance functionality, performance, and efficiency. The Packaging Engineer develops, tests, and maintains packaging standards and guidelines to support scalable and effective packaging solutions across the product portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, efficient, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Utilize computer and mechanical design tools to create packaging products.
  • Review preliminary production samples, and provide feedback to vendors on improvements.
  • Work closely, communicate and coordinate with internal Product development, Project management, creative graphic designers, engineering, operations, manufacturing, global suppliers and sourcing.
  • Leverage fundamental engineering, math, computer skills in the development of practical solutions to technical problems.
  • Execute packaging experiments and plant/packaging line trials.
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.
  • Be knowledgeable of packaging equipment/machinery capabilities and actively participates in equipment selection process and evaluation.
  • Write packaging and/or raw material portion of new or revises existing finished product specifications.
  • Knowledge of GMPs, quality and safety requirements, ingredient performance and interactions with equipment, statistical process control, critical control points and new product scale up dynamics.
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
  • Work closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.
  • Work with the manufacturing department to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications.
  • Bring innovative, out-of-the-box thinking to packaging design and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with R&D chemists to ensure packaging and formula requirements align throughout development.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required.
  • Must have 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards is essential.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, 3D modeling (SolidWorks required) and 3D printing processes / equipment use.
  • Experience in rapid prototyping.
  • Experience in a regulated environment (FDA).
  • Experience with hazardous goods (lithium batteries, plug-in devices, and fragrance solvents).
  • Problem solving and decision making skills are necessary.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have good communication skills, orally and in writing.
  • Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts is needed; ISO 9001 certification (e.g., CQA, CQE, CQIA) is desirable.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize personal workload.
  • Computer skills - proficient with office suite/ Google equivalent applications: Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with innovative or creative packaging design.
  • Experience collaborating with R&D/chemistry teams on formula-packaging compatibility.

Skills

  • Knowledge of packaging and shipping test methods to assure packaging performance meets shipping stresses.
  • Basic knowledge of GMPs, quality and safety requirements, ingredient performance and interactions with equipment, statistical process control, critical control points and new product scale up dynamics.
  • Ability to identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
