PA/NP - Neonatal NICU Level III-C Part-Time
About the Role
The NICU Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs in a Level III NICU at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, part of Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Proficient in newborn resuscitation, intubation and stabilization, umbilical lines, PIV, arterial blood draw, ventilation management, needle aspiration and chest tubes, spinal tap, interpretation of x-rays, and appropriate and efficient use of consultants. NNP required or NNP eligible; PA should have completed a NICU fellowship.

Responsibilities
- Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with education, training, and experience.
- Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient's age, gender, and clinical problem.
- Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants.
- Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities.
- Prescribe medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and NJ regulations, providing patient education as needed.
- Promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) PA practice recognition through conferences, publications, and presentations.
- Provide patient- and family-centered, compassionate, and effective care for health promotion and disease treatment.
- Practice as a healthcare provider according to Medical Staff rules, bylaws, and delineation of privileges.
- Apply evidence-based and value-based medicine to analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes.
- Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self-management promotion for chronic conditions.
- Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the practice specialty.
- Translate "best practice" into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care.
- Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families.
- Facilitate consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among the healthcare team through participation in daily interdisciplinary rounds.
- Serve as an advocate for patients and families, addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate.
- Act as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities.
- Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as necessary.
- Demonstrate accountability for professional practice, adhering to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes.
- Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars.
- Mentor other PAs, precept students in PA programs, and participate in educational programs as a clinical expert.
- Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials.
- Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice.
- Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications.
- Identify ethical care issues and coordinate interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them.
- Comply with HMH and department-specific scope of services, policies, and procedures.
- Adhere to all HMH infection control and safety policies.
- Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
For Nurse Practitioners:
- Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program.
- Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Maintains clinical competencies through continuing education and clinical practice.
- Experience in a relevant patient care setting (or as regulations dictate).
- National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law.
- Collaborative agreement with physicians on staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Required for Nurse Practitioners:
- NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
- Advanced Nurse Practitioner (with Master's Degree).
- BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
- Board certified by AANP or ANCC.
- NNP eligible.
- AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
For Physician Assistants:
- Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
- Completion of a NICU fellowship.
Licensure & Certifications Required for Physician Assistants:
- Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant License.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
Skills & Abilities for Both Roles:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer platforms, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite.
Pay
Minimum rate of $96,457.92 annually. Hackensack Meridian Health is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act. The starting rate may vary based on labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding. Full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) positions include a comprehensive benefits package, such as health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits. Certain positions may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, commissions, or shift differentials for evening, night, or weekend shifts.
