P/T Seasonal Crossing Guard Substitute

Part-time seasonal substitute position with the Mendham Borough Police Department.

Responsibilities

• Assemble children and other pedestrians behind curb lines awaiting traffic lulls or signal changes.
• Interrupt traffic and escort children and other pedestrians into the street, allowing them to cross safely.
• Instruct children in proper procedures for safe street crossing.
• Expedite the movement of children and pedestrians.
• Observe vehicle movements and, safety permitting, record license numbers of vehicles whose drivers jeopardize safe street crossing by operating unsafely. Report such drivers to the Police Department.

Requirements

• Knowledge of basic roadway safety rules.
• Knowledge of basic safe driving rules and procedures.
• Knowledge of traffic safety principles, laws, and regulations.
• Knowledge of basic first aid.
• Ability to obtain the attention and cooperation of school children and other pedestrians.
• Ability to identify traffic hazards.
• Ability to observe and record license numbers and incident details accurately.
• Ability to follow written and oral directions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, particularly with children.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods and hold a handheld stop sign.
• Must be able to work outside in unfavorable weather conditions.
• High School Graduate or possess a GED equivalent.

Training

Training will be provided to selected candidates.
