Overnight- DVSA Shelter Advocate

About the role

The Shelter Advocate provides crisis intervention, direct service, and systems advocacy for individuals residing in a domestic violence shelter setting. The role incorporates Family Pathways' guiding principles: trust, collaboration, communication, integrity, respect, positivity, and creativity.

Responsibilities

• Provide support, advocacy, crisis intervention, information, and referral to callers on a 24-hour crisis line, while assessing calls for appropriateness.
• Facilitate case planning and coordinate personal/legal advocacy for residents, collaborating with staff to review cases and make recommendations.
• Complete intake forms with all new residents within 24 hours of entry into the shelter; orient residents to the shelter facility; explain expectations of residents in the shelter, and inform residents of services offered.
• Plan resident groups and activities: support, parenting, illness management, house meetings, etc., as needed and directed.
• Help residents hone skills such as problem-solving, crisis management, conflict resolution, and de-escalation, while cultivating a welcoming, peaceful, healing environment for residents.
• Provide transportation for residents when necessary.

Requirements

• Able to provide a Primary Advocate approach.
• Able to complete intake forms with all new residents within 24 hours of entry into the shelter.
• Able to orient residents to the shelter facility and explain expectations of residents in the shelter, and inform residents of services offered.
• Able to plan resident groups and activities as needed and directed.
• Able to help residents hone skills such as problem-solving, crisis management, conflict resolution, and de-escalation.
• Able to provide transportation for residents when necessary.

Qualifications

• Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Able to pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
• Able to maintain a clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).

Skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of domestic violence and trauma-informed care.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Experience with group facilitation and activity planning.
• Excellent problem-solving and crisis management skills.
• Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients and colleagues.

Benefits

• Starting Salary: $18/hour, plus an additional $1.00/hour shift differential for hours worked between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.
