Cal-Wood’s Overnight Coordinator (OC) is the primary leader responsible for evening operations, overnight safety, and morning program readiness during school programs. The role involves close collaboration with instructors, kitchen staff, and teachers to oversee dinner service, facilitate evening programs, respond to overnight emergencies, and ensure campus security and readiness for the following day. The OC exercises independent judgment in managing evening operations, allocating staff, resolving participant concerns, responding to emergencies, and ensuring compliance with Cal-Wood safety standards and state regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary overnight leader responsible for student and staff safety after daytime programming concludes.
  • Coordinate and oversee dinner service, ensuring meals run smoothly and all participants understand meal procedures.
  • Make clear announcements for meals, evening activities, fire drills, and emergency situations.
  • Lead or supervise evening programs, including campfires, night hikes, team-building activities, and other evening experiences.
  • Train, coach, and support evening instructional staff to ensure engaging, safe, and high-quality programming.
  • Build positive relationships with teachers, parent chaperones, and students while providing outstanding customer service.
  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and make reasonable accommodations for accessibility needs.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of Cal-Wood policies and behavioral expectations.
  • Complete evening campus safety checks, including securing buildings, extinguishing campfires, checking common spaces, and ensuring participants are safely in cabins.
  • Remain on-site overnight and serve as the first responder for medical incidents, behavioral concerns, facility issues, weather events, wildlife encounters, or other emergencies.
  • Assess incidents, provide emergency care within the scope of Wilderness First Responder certification, and coordinate emergency response when necessary.
  • Communicate promptly with Cal-Wood leadership regarding emergencies or significant overnight incidents.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and communicate overnight updates to the daytime leadership team.
  • Prepare breakfast service by coordinating with kitchen staff, ensuring dining areas are ready, and supporting a smooth transition into the morning schedule.
  • Assist with morning announcements and help ensure programs begin on time.
  • Restock and organize program supplies as needed.
  • Participate in regular communication with the School Programs Manager regarding program quality, safety concerns, staffing needs, and operational improvements.

Requirements

  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Experience supervising youth in outdoor, residential, or camp settings.
  • Demonstrated experience responding to emergencies and making sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor seasonal instructional staff.
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) strongly preferred.
  • Highly motivated, dependable, adaptable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to pass required background checks.
  • Ability to hike up to 2 miles on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and work outdoors in all weather conditions, including at night.
  • Reliable high-clearance vehicle (AWD or 4WD preferred) for commuting on steep mountain roads.

Schedule

4:30–10:00 PM Monday through Thursday nights and 7:30–9:30 AM Tuesday–Friday mornings. The OC is also first on call for overnight emergencies.

Pay

$17–$22/hour, depending on housing.

There may be an option for shared housing with a private room onsite or nearby in Jamestown, CO (housing available for employee only, no pets allowed).
