Responsibilities
- Practice excellent customer service and maintain a professional, courteous manner in all interactions (in-person, telephone, text, and email).
- Develop product knowledge expertise to assist contractors, remodelers, industrial accounts, and other professional customers.
- Understand competitor strengths and weaknesses; present Morrison Terrebonne Lumber products and services as effective alternatives.
- Coordinate jobsite deliveries, including timing and special requirements, with delivery personnel.
- Participate in local builder associations as appropriate.
- Perform material “takeoffs”—estimates of specific items and quantities needed to complete a customer’s job—upon request.
- Recommend retail price adjustments to management when quoting jobs to secure customer business.
- Price special orders from wholesale catalogs or online sources according to store and company gross margin guidelines.
- Prospect for new customers via telephone and in-person visits.
- Write and process orders and special orders using Morrison Terrebonne Lumber point-of-sale systems to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Provide management with regular reports on sales performance, call history, and upcoming quoting opportunities.
- Maintain budgeted or acceptable levels of sales and gross margin across all product categories.
- Maintain a budgeted mix of customer accounts.
- Possess working knowledge of company and store security measures.
- Act ethically and professionally, representing the company positively at all times.
- Follow company and jobsite safety guidelines, participate in regular store safety meetings, and practice safe driving.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2-3 years of previous work experience in retail sales of building materials and hardware to professional contractors.
- Strong math, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
- Personable, trustworthy demeanor with problem-solving and organizational abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively via telephone, text, and email.
- Preferred knowledge of lumber, building materials, blueprint reading, residential homebuilding, contractor sales, and general hardware merchandise.
- Physical ability to lift and load merchandise up to 100 lbs., work at heights over six feet, climb ladders, and maneuver safely in stores, yards, warehouses, and jobsites.
- Ability to drive to customer jobsites or other business locations.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
