Outreach Athletic Trainer, Float
Full-time, benefits-eligible position with a 40-hour work week. Schedule includes flexible hours, nights, and weekends to support athletic events and clinics.
About the Role
The Athletic Trainer – Floater serves as a flexible clinical and outreach resource within Athletic Training Services, providing athletic training coverage for partnered high schools, community sporting events, and orthopedic clinics as needed. The role ensures uninterrupted patient care and departmental support through injury prevention, on-field emergency care, clinical evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation, return-to-play decision-making, medical documentation, inventory and equipment management, and coordination of referrals within the healthcare system. The athletic trainer works independently while collaborating with physicians, coaches, schools, and healthcare teams, supports community service initiatives, assists with education and outreach programs, mentors students when applicable, and maintains compliance with professional, regulatory, and organizational standards. Local travel and adaptability to varying assignments are required.
Responsibilities
- Provide athletic training services to collegiate and/or professional sport events as determined necessary to attain departmental goals of community service.
- Work within the Sports Medicine Team concept and assist with event coverage as necessary to attain departmental goals of community service.
- Provide acute medical care to athletes on the field during practices or sporting events.
- Provide clinical athletic training services in local orthopedic clinics as necessary.
- Perform on-site recognition, evaluation, and immediate care procedures of illness and injury, including emergency situations, independent of setting.
- Perform clinical injury evaluation and assessment of patient's level of function; follow standardized clinical practice in diagnostic reasoning and medical decision-making.
- Determine appropriate therapeutic treatment and provide rehabilitation, reconditioning strategies, taping/wrapping, and bracing for preventative and protective treatment.
- Implement treatment program objectives, including long- and short-term goals, and incorporate assessment measures to determine program effectiveness.
- Collaborate with directing physician to recommend discontinuation of athletic training services when the patient has received optimal benefit; document final assessment of patient status.
- Determine return-to-play standards for injuries for athletes and the active population.
- Maintain daily records of treatment logs, injury reports, doctor's referrals, and medical inventory management according to clinic standards.
- Complete set-up of all practices and games, including medical supplies, fracture management equipment, hydration, cryotherapy, and other necessary supplies.
- Assist with planning, organizing, implementing, and ensuring compliance of departmental policies.
- Ensure an Emergency Action Plan is in place for each venue and discussed with the school's Athletic Director, coaches, and athletes, including local EMS.
- Assist with the preparation of lectures, sports medicine programs, and seminars; serve as a presenter when needed.
- Mentor and manage on-site education of students enrolled in university-based athletic training education programs or other healthcare professionals at outreach events, if applicable.
- Ensure all athletic training room sites have appropriate supplies and equipment; recommend new equipment for acquisition.
- Develop a physician referral network, including family practice, orthopedic, physical therapy, and other specialties as needed.
- Facilitate patient entry into the healthcare system and properly track and document referrals.
- Maintain necessary training on concussion education, management, and care, including acute management of the cervical spine.
- Adhere to departmental dress code when providing on-site athletic training services.
- Perform other related clinical duties as required by the State Board of Medicine/Board of Athletic Training Statute and Rules.
Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in athletic training from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) program.
- Current athletic training certification by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC).
- Currently licensed or eligible for a State License in Athletic Training within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to complete American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS) certification, including CPR and AED training, within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to manage a stressful work environment with frequent interruptions.
- Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to varying assignments.
- Local travel required; flexible scheduling, including nights and weekends.

Pay
Pay range: $26.55 - $39.85 per hour. This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus of up to $12,000 for qualified applicants.
