Outbound Assistant Manager (Day Shift)
About the Role
The Outbound Assistant Manager assists the Outbound Manager in overseeing the shipping department of the facility within their respective shift, including picking, packing, and indirect positions. This role focuses on quality, accuracy, and providing an excellent customer experience. The Outbound Assistant Manager collaborates with leadership across shifts and departments to ensure compliance with protocols and standard operating procedures, problem-solving, and meeting operational directives.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the management of day-to-day operations within the Outbound department, including Picking, Consolidation, Packing, QA, and other indirect roles.
- Ensure the team maintains a high degree of quality, efficiency, and accuracy to satisfy customer needs.
- Train, coach, develop, and hold accountable up to X employees to achieve operational metrics and meet distribution center needs.
- Work closely with the Inbound Manager to monitor daily, weekly, and monthly metrics for the receiving department; identify and resolve operating issues as needed.
- Provide clear and frequent communication to all teams regarding company policies and procedures.
- Lead weekly and monthly meetings with the Outbound Manager to review metrics, areas of improvement, employee relations issues, and provide updates on initiatives and projects.
- Analyze opportunities for improvement, including productivity growth, cost reduction, damage mitigation, and increased process efficiency.
- Ensure timely completion of employee performance reviews and provide frequent, constructive feedback to all team members.
- Promote a high level of employee engagement and ensure adherence to all safety regulations.
- Complete administrative duties related to employee management promptly and to the expected standard.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to meet distribution center needs and foster a team mentality.
- Work with the Outbound Manager and Team Leads to create development plans for employees to maintain engagement and build a leadership bench.
- Maintain a high level of integrity and honesty, embodying and modeling the company’s core values.
- Serve as a leader for the entire distribution center, holding peers, managers, and employees accountable to expectations.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed while standing and/or walking, up to and including 12 hours per day.
- Requires effective communication using speech, vision, and hearing.
- Requires regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
- Requires regular bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
- Requires the ability to regularly lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 75 lbs.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in operations leadership.
- Experience working in a distribution or manufacturing environment preferred.
- Automated picking experience is a plus.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical and complex concepts clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing business needs and address difficult situations with diplomacy and emotional intelligence.
- Customer service-oriented attitude with a desire to exceed expectations.
- Ability to work off-shift as required to respond to urgent needs.
Working Environment
The work environment involves regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Occasional activities may involve exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, dust, fumes, and gases. The noise level is usually moderate, with average and normal passage of employees through the work area.
