About the Role

The Orthopedic Medical Assistant works in an ambulatory setting providing assistance to Physicians, Physician Assistants, and their patients. This role involves performing a variety of duties including rooming, educating, and assisting patients during their visits, as well as helping with minor procedures, casting, splinting, and suture or staple removal. The position requires stellar customer service in all patient interactions and collaboration with practice staff and physicians in a cooperative and results-oriented manner.

Responsibilities

• Assists Orthopedic Physicians, PAs, and NPs with fracture reduction, dislocations, and the application of casts or splints.
• Applies slings, ace wraps, crutches, canes, immobilizers, plaster, fiberglass, and preformed splints; instructs patients in their proper care and use.
• Removes casts, splints, and other orthopedic devices.
• Assists with fitting orthotic devices when necessary.
• Obtains and documents patient vital signs in medical records.
• Accurately enters patient health history and meets departmental charting initiatives and metrics.
• Interviews, triages, and prepares patients to facilitate smooth workflow.
• Demonstrates clinical competency and problem-solving in delivering patient care according to departmental policies.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living if necessary.
• Prepares equipment and assists providers in minor office procedures.
• Removes sutures or staples and applies or removes bandages and dressings.
• Properly disposes of medical waste.
• Demonstrates and educates patients on exercises as ordered by the provider.
• Maintains sufficient inventories of medical and office supplies; processes ordering of clinical supplies.
• Demonstrates professionalism and establishes positive rapport with patients using AAMC’s Service Excellence Framework (iCare).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required; documentation of graduation from an accredited training program preferred.
• Customer service experience preferred.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology preferred.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

• Reasonable expectation of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
• Medium work: Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or move up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
• Must be able to sit, stand, lift, bend, and move intermittently during work hours.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to speak, hear, read, and write English fluently.
• Must have the mental capacity to work independently, exercise judgment, and make sound decisions.
• Must demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and effective communication.
• Must maintain a clean, neat, and friendly appearance.

Pay

Pay Range: $17.50—$26 USD per hour.
