About the Role

Orientation Assistants work to make newcomer non-English speaking students feel more comfortable in the new school environment. They may translate for the teacher, explain classroom rules and policies to students and parents, help facilitate conversation between the classroom teacher and parents, and assist the new student in understanding and navigating the school system.

Requirements

  • Understand and speak clearly and distinctly in English and the desired language (Mandarin).
  • Listen to English and speak in the desired language simultaneously.
  • Listen to English or the desired language for several paragraphs and repeat the information accurately.
  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
  • Two years of experience providing simultaneous and consecutive oral interpretations.

This is an on-call position with assignments varying in length.

General Requirements

  • Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance.
  • Submit to a general tuberculosis examination.
  • Be fingerprinted.
  • Complete a pre-placement physical examination.
  • Show proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Pass a drug test (District has a drug-free workplace policy).

Benefits

  • Health Insurance Plan: Employees working 5 hours or more receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision, and employee or family dental coverage.
  • Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for 16 authorized holidays (for twelve-month employees).
  • Longevity Pay: 3.5% increase added to base salary after 10 years, plus 3.5% after 15 years, 4.7% after 20 years, and 4% every five years thereafter.
  • Retirement: Membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Federal Social Security program for employees working four hours or more. Contributions made by both the District and employees.
  • Shift Differential: Employees required to work more than four hours of their regular shift between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. receive a 3.75% pay increase for the entirety of each applicable day.
  • Sick Leave: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid sick leave per year, with no limit on accumulation. Sick leave is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
  • Vacation: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid vacation leave per year, with increased days after 5 years of service. Vacation is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
  • Professional Growth: After one year of service, regular classified employees may earn additional salary increments for improving skills through continuing education.
  • Veterans Preference: Veterans and disabled veterans receive preference points added to passing scores in open examinations for entry-level classifications.

Process

Candidates must successfully complete all phases of the application and examination process to be ranked on the eligibility list, which is typically valid for one year. The top three candidates may be certified for selection by the appointing authority. Employee service credit (0.5 points per year, up to 5 points) is added to final scores for regular District employees.

Newly appointed employees serve a probationary period of up to six months or 130 days of paid service.
