Responsibilities
- Facilitates process of patient management in the surgical center.
- Participates in making pre-op calls to patients if possible.
- Collaborates with the front office staff on intake process as needed.
- Affords assistance with pre-op assessment and teaching.
- Plans and prepares for interoperative nursing care of the patient.
- Gathers equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
- Affords creation and maintenance of multiple sterile fields/observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis.
- Functions in the role of Scrub and Circulating nurse.
- Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts as required.
- Affords administration of medications and solutions as prescribed.
- Position and prepares patient on operating table.
- Maintains control of the environment.
- Adheres to safety standards and precautions.
- Delegates duties only to competent appropriate personnel.
- Participates in maintaining and assuring proper functioning of equipment and sterilizing procedures.
- Performs in emergency situations.
- Evaluates readiness for patient discharge and collaborates with the anesthesiologist in the discharge process.
- Reports any potential or actual adverse event as appropriate.
- Documents clearly and maintains the patient record.
- Maintains pleasant and open communication with patients, families, staff and physicians.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Minimum two years of recent operating room nursing preferred.
- Working knowledge of office equipment and Software.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, policies, procedures, and medical office practices, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol and professional etiquette.
- Understanding of electronic medical systems.
- Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills (i.e. using expressive vocabulary that communicates a complete and detailed message, avoiding spelling errors, employing a respectful tone).
- Ability to maintain enthusiasm while facing a high volume and a large variety of duties.
- Ability and interest in learning procedures and software functionalities that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of individual and department efforts.
- Organized, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Interprets, adapts and applies guidelines and procedures appropriately.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by demonstrating empathy and tact.
- Maintains the strictest confidentiality on all patient issues.
- Registered Nurse with orthopedic perioperative experience desired.
- Current Massachusetts RN license.
- BLS certifications required.
