About the role

Vision To Learn is the largest school‑based vision care nonprofit in the country, providing free eye exams and glasses to students in underserved communities. Founded in Los Angeles in 2012, the organization has delivered over 3.8 million vision screenings, 750,000 eye exams and 630,000 prescription glasses in the last decade. Based in Portland, OR, this part‑time, contract position (up to two days per week) places you on a mobile clinical team that conducts high‑quality eye exams for school‑aged children, prescribes and dispenses glasses, and works to remove vision barriers that affect learning and long‑term opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Provide vision evaluations: check visual acuity, assess binocular vision, intraocular pressure, pupils, perform a full refraction and prescribe appropriate correction, and assess ocular health.
• Prescribe vision devices, test patient on all applicable equipment to determine the most suitable option, and instruct patient in proper use.
• Confirm that patient diagnosis is properly documented in internal systems.

Requirements

• Current Oregon optometry license.
• Doctorate degree (O.D.) required.
• Ability to commute throughout portions of the greater Portland area for mobile clinic work.
• Pass Department of Justice background check/fingerprinting (LiveScan), child abuse history clearance, TB test, and drug test.
• Demonstrated track record of quality patient care with a positive, proactive attitude and dedication to the mission.
