Opto Electronics Assembler II

This is an hourly production position at the Thorlabs Ultrafast Optoelectronics (UFO) division in Ann Arbor, MI.

Responsibilities

• Understand written assembly, drawings, and test instructions for a wide range of products to properly assemble products to the highest quality standards with minimal scrap or rework.
• Assemble and test optical, electrical, and mechanical components of varying sizes, including micro-assembly and wirebonding.
• Prepare, clean, and inspect parts of assembled components and micro-assemblies.
• Assemble and test precision fiber-optic components and instruments.
• Perform intricate soldering and de-soldering of fine, extremely small electronic components.
• Meet expected assembly timelines outlined on production orders.
• Remain focused on production orders and assembly responsibilities throughout the day.
• Assist in inventory cycle counting as needed and notify supervisor of low stock levels.
• Cross-train on various functions to provide flexibility and support across production operations.
• Provide expert support, development, and training for all soldering processes.
• Perform quality control at all stages of production.
• Identify opportunities for improvement in assembly and test procedures.
• Work to the highest quality standards while meeting production standards.
• Train new employees on assembling components and testing procedures.
• Maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies, and regulations.
• Meet company standards for quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis.
• Adhere to company policies, procedures, and directives regarding workplace behavior.

Requirements

• 2 years of experience soldering electronic parts on PCBs, including fine pitch surface mount parts (SMT).
• Intermediate-level skill in Microsoft programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with inventory cycle counting.
• High School Diploma or GED.

• Detail-oriented, highly organized, and enjoy following and developing processes.
• Ability to identify electronic components and other small parts.
• Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
• Steady hand and good hand-eye coordination; ability to work with the aid of a microscope for extended periods.

Physical Activities

• Work may be active; could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work.
• Exerts up to 30 lbs. of force occasionally.
• Regularly required to operate precision machines.
• Work areas may be noisy at times.
• Must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small.
• Work with standard solvents, glues, and adhesives found in assembly environments.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $20.44 - $25.55, depending on experience.
