Job Summary
Aids patients in selecting eyeglasses, measures patients' facial and ocular dimensions, orders, checks, and adjusts eyeglasses and/or contact lenses to fit the patient, and performs duties related to optical dispensing. May assist in fitting contact lenses under supervision of an Optometrist.
Essential Responsibilities
- Complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership.
- Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs.
- Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
- Assists patients in selecting eyeglasses or contact lenses to conform to prescription specifications.
- Measures patients' facial and/or ocular dimensions.
- Measures base curve, thickness, and power to verify prescription accuracy of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
- Greets and signs-in patients when they arrive.
- Refers and may schedule patients for eye examinations.
- Verifies patients' KP Optical benefits, check eligibility, records benefits usage and charts information utilizing appropriate and related systems.
- Uses knowledge of lens types and materials to enter orders on POS system for manufacturing.
- Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of ones actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships.
- Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolves problems.
- Troubleshoots patient vision and frame fitting problems.
- Adjusts finished eyeglasses and modifies lenses for proper fit.
- Performs major and minor frame repairs.
- Inspects and verifies new product and patient orders coming from the optical lab.
- Responsible for inventory control.
- Keeps current on product and availability.
- Responsible for daily cash accounting.
- May support Optometrist in screening when Assistant is not available.
- Communicates with Optometrist to minimize rework.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an optician or contact lens technician.
- ABO/NCLE, COA, COT, ROA or other comparable current certification may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
Education
- A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
License, Certification, Registration

- Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.
Testing
- Must successfully complete the performance skill assessment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred certification by the ABO/ and/or NCLE.
Pay Range
$28.16 - $40.8 / hour
