About the role

The Optical Technician assists optometrists in delivering exceptional eye care services by recording comprehensive ocular and medical history, including the patient’s chief complaint, current medications, allergies, visual acuities (V/A’s), color vision, and stereopsis testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Optometrist in performing vision screenings and exams both in the field and in the office, including packing and transporting equipment.
  • Perform monthly inventory, check expiration dates of exam medications, contact lens solutions, and OTC medications, and discard expired items in accordance with regulations.
  • Keep exam rooms stocked, including bulbs, post-mydriatic spectacles supplies, and equipment.
  • Operate the Humphrey Visual Field machine as directed by the Optometrist.
  • Take Fundus Photos as directed by the Optometrist.
  • Conduct patient contact lens insertion and removal classes (Soft and RGP) and dispense contact lens trials as directed by the Optometrist.
  • Preload pertinent data into the ECW system prior to appointments.
  • Ensure Optometry patients are booked correctly, including verifying optical insurance benefits and informing patients of expected payment and fees prior to appointments.
  • Notify and log Optometric no-shows in ECW, send no-show letters, and follow up on missed appointments.
  • Interpret exam medical terminology and read exam documents.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Optometrist, patients, in-house staff, and outside medical personnel, relaying patient-specific questions and messages.
  • Manage the patient recall system for Optometry patients and handle recall billing alerts in eCW.
  • Train new hires in office operations, processes, and protocols with a focus on the Optometry Assistant/Tech role.
  • Provide leadership and direction to Optometry Assistant/Tech staff.
  • Guide patients in frame selection in accordance with insurance guidelines.
  • Log mail return status in ECW and contact lens information (expiration date, lot number, dispense date) at the time of dispensing.
  • Verify if eyewear is in when patients call and schedule dispensing appointments as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service education, and perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior medical office experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with an electronic health record system.
  • Appropriate use of the ECW system, including knowledge of routing data, patient communications, message systems, documents, fax, and referral processes.
  • Cross-trained to schedule appointments, register patients, and verify insurance.

Pay

$20.00 per hour.
