About the role

Optical Consultants are responsible for selling eyewear and eyewear accessories to patients. They ensure patients are fitted with the right-size frames that fit their needs and lifestyle and dispense lenses with correct prescription and measurements. Optical Consultants are at the heart of our business, delivering extraordinary experiences to each patient through technical and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patients with a complete understanding of customized recommendations for products and services.
  • Develop clientele by providing outstanding service and obtaining referrals.
  • Stay current on company/industry products, procedures, manufacturer rebates, and types of lenses and frames available.
  • Handle patient calls, update patients on order status, and resolve order issues; escalate to Store Manager as needed.
  • Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames, lens types, and lens treatments (e.g., tints, coatings) based on specific needs and facial measurements.
  • Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
  • Take eye and face measurements to ensure proper fit.
  • Interpret prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists.
  • Create work orders for lab technicians, specifying lens details.
  • Follow up on pending orders, verify timelines, and inform patients of delays or order arrivals.
  • Dispense glasses by inspecting the product, checking fit, adjusting as needed, and soliciting patient feedback.
  • Adjust eyewear for visual acuity, proper fit, and comfort using tools like pliers, wrenches, and frame warmers.
  • Perform eyewear repairs and adjustments using tools such as pupilometers, PD sticks, and lensometers.
  • Communicate regularly with technicians and store managers regarding patient information or order status.
  • Inspect final products for flaws, clean and polish lenses, and maintain overall store cleanliness.
  • Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, work benches, office areas, bathrooms, and breakrooms.
  • Restock retail boards with new merchandise.
  • Address product issues and answer patient questions about insurance, warranties, pricing, promotions, and services.
  • Collaborate with technicians, front desk associates, managers, and optometrists.
  • Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supplies, sunglasses, and safety glasses.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of one-year experience working as an Optician strongly preferred.
  • Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor; sales experience preferred.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Dependability and punctuality.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand for up to 8 hours a day.
