Position Overview and Responsibilities
John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is seeking an OPS Park Ranger to join their team. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to perform landscaping and outdoor work, excellent visitor service skills, and a strong work ethic. They must be able to work well with others and independently in both the ranger station and the field. Applicants must be available to work rotating shifts including nights, holidays, and weekends.
Maintenance
- Picks up ground litter and empties trash cans.
- Cleans office and restroom, maintains and repairs small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, picnic sites, and other necessary facilities.
- May operate a variety of equipment including chainsaws, weed eaters, and lawn mowers.
Resource Management
- Performs exotic plant removal under the supervision of the Park Services Specialist.
- Affords assistance with imperiled species monitoring.
- May assist with prescribed fire program.
Visitor Services
- Explains the facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment, and education.
- Meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions.
- Operates cash register.
- Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.
Administration
- Prepares reports in a timely manner, including daily financial reports, timesheets, vehicle logs, maintenance logs, and rainfall reports.
Protection
- Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical, and archaeological facilities and resources and their use for the enjoyment of the visitor.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of and ability to perform routine inspections.
- Identify and investigate problems and maintain facilities and equipment.
- Utilizing motor vehicles.
- Skill in using various tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Work independently with little supervision.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Prepare reports.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Perform physical labor utilizing power/electrical/gas tools and equipment.
- Deal with visitor inquiries in a tactful, efficient, and courteous manner.
- Understand and apply applicable rules, directives, policies, laws, and regulations.
- Work rotating shifts including nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Develop and conduct interpretive programs.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Handle money and balance cash receipts.
- Lift 40 pounds.
Position of Special Trust Requirement
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Pay
$15.00 per hour
