About the Role

Tennessee Eye Care Travel Team Knoxville, a division of Summit Medical Group, is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join their practice. This is a PRN opportunity. The position involves preparing patients for examinations, performing vision screenings, administering eye medications, maintaining ophthalmic instruments, and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures. The Ophthalmic Technician will also train other assistants and act as a scribe for the physician.

Responsibilities

• Take ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
• Perform lensometry, refractometry, basic muscle balance testing, tonometry, assess pupils, confrontation visual fields, and gross external exams.
• Administer diagnostic tests and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, ophthalmic photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and Optical Biometry (IOL Master and Lensstar).
• Make introductions and establish rapport with patients; initiate patient evaluation, documenting chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings.
• Act as a scribe while the physician examines the patient, entering data into EMR and overseeing patient flow.
• Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the physician's direction.
• Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by the physician, with full documentation in the patient chart.
• Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions.
• Assist with in-office procedures, ensuring proper consent is obtained, and handle setup and cleanup.
• Train other assistants and maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms.
• Comply with all practice procedures, protocols, state, and federal regulations.
• Return patient phone calls and address questions or concerns.
• Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring proper equipment maintenance.
• Follow all safety procedures and maintain strict confidentiality.
• Adhere to the corporate compliance plan and participate in site-level Quality Improvement Activities.
• Perform related work as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• No experience required; 1 year of ophthalmic experience preferred.
• Certification/License: None required; Certified Ophthalmic Technologist (COMT) credential preferred.
