Responsibilities

  • Assists the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status.
  • Performs clinical tests as directed by the doctor, based on patient complaints and history.
  • Acts as a medical scribe during physician examinations, entering data into electronic medical records.
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Affixes to simple in-office procedures, ensuring proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Aids in patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, including state and federal regulations.
  • Understands and complies with documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.
  • Reports inventory and supply needs to leadership, providing timely and necessary supply orders.
  • Participates in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Completes work/school excuses and provides patients with medication instructions.
  • Reports potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
  • Contributes to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintains a positive attitude characterized by cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an uncertified ophthalmic assistant preferred.
  • COA Eligibility preferred.
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests based on formal education and/or clinical experience.
  • Understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.
