Responsibilities
- Assists the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status.
- Performs clinical tests as directed by the doctor, based on patient complaints and history.
- Acts as a medical scribe during physician examinations, entering data into electronic medical records.
- Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
- Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
- Affixes to simple in-office procedures, ensuring proper informed consent is obtained.
- Aids in patient education.
- Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
- Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, including state and federal regulations.
- Understands and complies with documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.
- Reports inventory and supply needs to leadership, providing timely and necessary supply orders.
- Participates in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings.
- Completes work/school excuses and provides patients with medication instructions.
- Reports potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
- Contributes to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
- Maintains a positive attitude characterized by cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as an uncertified ophthalmic assistant preferred.
- COA Eligibility preferred.
- Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Qualifications
- Proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests based on formal education and/or clinical experience.
- Understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.
