About the role

The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University offers an exciting opportunity for exceptional candidates to train for a career as an Ophthalmic Technician, with no experience required. This position provides technician/clinical support to physicians and includes administrative duties such as answering patient questions, refilling prescriptions, and assisting with medical consultations.

Responsibilities

  • Asks every single patient to state their name and date of birth before performing any tests.
  • Compares the patient's EMRN to the number on the testing machine.
  • Records patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessments, falls risk, and family history.
  • Checks pupil response to light and measures intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry.
  • Performs various ophthalmic tests as ordered by the physician.
  • Screens for ocular motility disorders.
  • Uses a slit lamp to examine the eye surface.
  • Performs basic maintenance or repairs of clinical equipment.
  • Compiles and enters data for clinical studies and participates in other clinical research projects as needed.
  • Aids in in-office procedures and assists with exam room supply maintenance.
  • Maintains refrigerators and sharps containers according to microbial control principles.
  • Ensures medication expiration dates are current and maintains inventory.
  • Monitors inventory and orders medications for intravitreal injections.
  • Provides input on templates/schedules to optimize patient flow and physician efficiency.
  • Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, and ocular emergencies.
  • Understands and practices JCAHO requirements to ensure clinic compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Prior experience in a clinical office setting as an ophthalmic technician preferred.

Skills

Basic understanding of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, and ocular emergencies. Familiarity with JCAHO requirements and ability to maintain clinic compliance. Proficiency in using clinical equipment and maintaining sterile environments. Strong communication skills to interact with patients and assist with administrative tasks.

Benefits

Pay

$19.75 - $35.35 HRLY ($23.22-$34.02 targeted)

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm or 9:30 am - 6:00pm
