Ophthalmic Technician

Duties And Responsibilities

• Acquaints all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
• Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and medical), family history (ocular and medical), and history of allergies and medications.
• Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed, and how the patient will be affected during the tests.
• Be responsible for all the pre-exam elements of the patient visit.
• Test and record patients far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
• Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurements utilizing an Auto lensometer, Autorefractor, Humphrey Visual fields, Fundus photography, ONH and Macula OCT, and Corneal Pachymetry.
• Helps maintain a smooth flow of patients, including communicating with the medical office support staff.
• Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, scheduling appointments, and patient care questions.
• Maintain cleanliness in the pretest and exam rooms.
• Maintains operating integrity of office equipment.
• Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

• Associate Degree, which includes course work in a Bio-Medical Technician field, and three years of experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility;
• or High School graduate or GED equivalent, and four years of experience in the appropriate bio-medical technical field in an approved hospital or health facility;
• or A satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

• Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred.
