Ophthalmic Assistant/Photographer - Ophthalmology - Full Time

This role is centered on advanced ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic testing, with additional support for basic patient work-up as needed. The primary focus is performing advanced ophthalmic photography and ancillary diagnostic studies, requiring technical expertise and a strong understanding of ocular anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The position also involves understanding day-to-day ophthalmology operations, assisting physicians, and staying current with new diagnostic technologies.

Responsibilities

• Perform, document, and report ophthalmic diagnostic studies, including ownership of equipment maintenance, software upgrades, and data backup.
• Obtain and document patient history, chief complaints, and collect clinical information (medical, medication, allergy, family, and social history) for provider review.
• Perform basic patient work-up and administer medications (e.g., eye drops) per scope of practice.
• Educate patients, explain tests, and assist patients in completing studies as directed by providers.
• Serve as a liaison between patients, providers, and ophthalmology staff, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Monitor diagnostic schedules for efficiency, orders, and errors, coordinating changes with clinical teams based on provider preferences and protocols.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and pharmaceutical products, checking expiration dates and following established policies.
• Maintain cleaning, sterilizing, disinfecting, and upkeep of ophthalmic exam rooms and ancillary equipment.
• Participate in staff training, onboarding, and required meetings.
• Provide coverage across locations and support departmental workflow and collaboration.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• For non-certified applicants, completion of the following is required within 6 months of hire:
  • Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC).
  • AAO Home Study Course.

Qualifications

• Preferred backgrounds include certification as an Ophthalmic Photographer, Ophthalmic Technician, Ophthalmic Assistant, or 2 years of clinical experience in ophthalmology or optometry.
• Candidates from medical office, clinical, dental, or nursing assistant backgrounds will also be considered.

Pay

$19.87 - $31.48/hour based on experience.
