About the Role
The Ophthalmic Assistant performs ophthalmic work-ups, procedures, measurements, and tests to provide data to the provider and assist in patient care. This role requires a good understanding of optometry and ophthalmology outpatient office routines and a commitment to demonstrating Patient Centeredness, Teamwork, and Excellence in daily duties. The position may require travel for coverage as needed.
Responsibilities
- Obtains and documents accurate chief complaints and comprehensive history of present illness. Reviews and verifies patient’s past ocular, medical, family, and social history.
- Performs portions of the ophthalmic exam, diagnostic testing, and procedures; accurately documents findings and stays current with new technology and procedures.
- Acts as a scribe for the provider, capturing, summarizing, and documenting pertinent examination data, clinical findings, and the assessment and plan.
- Assists the provider with office procedures, completion of informed consent, and patient education.
- Cleans and sterilizes office instruments, performs basic maintenance, quality control, and maintains inventory of ophthalmic exam room and ancillary equipment according to protocols.
- Completes and processes forms (DMV, disability, legal blindness, insurance, low vision, etc.); reviews and monitors the provider’s schedule for efficiency and errors.
- Triages messages and phone calls, responding to patients as directed by the provider.
- Provides orientation and training for new employees and teaches other staff members as opportunities arise.
- Answers phones, schedules appointments, and assists with bump lists.
- Travels to other offices and covers as needed throughout the department.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (required).
- Completion of Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) within the first 6 weeks of employment (required).
- Completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Home Study course within the first 6 months of employment for candidates without COA (required).
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Paraoptometric Assistant (POA) certification (preferred).
- CPR Certification (preferred).
- 2 years of clinical experience in an ophthalmology or optometry practice (preferred; will consider medical office or clinical assistant experience).
- Previous customer service experience.
