About the role
We are seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant. Under close supervision, you will assist Eye Center physicians and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluating patient eye problems. You will perform basic ophthalmic testing procedures as directed by the physician or supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the delivery of patient care in an effective manner.
- Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including but not limited to: visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, simple color vision tests, and refraction.
- Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
- Administer dilation or anesthetic drops as needed.
- Assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.
- Perform stocking and maintenance functions, including cleaning and stocking exam and procedure rooms daily.
- Maintain appropriate supply of sample drug medications and assist with ordering medical/office supplies.
- Prepare contaminated instruments and equipment for sterilization and transport.
- Facilitate calibration, maintenance, and monitoring of equipment.
- Perform various clerical functions, such as assisting with appointments, telephone call screening, and answering phones.
- Take messages and relay them to appropriate individuals.
- Under the direction of a physician, call pharmacies with prescription refills and record prescriptions in patient charts.
- File test results, forms, and letters into medical records.
- Interact with patients, visitors, and all personnel in a courteous manner, maintaining confidentiality and respect for individual differences.
- Resolve conflicts in a healthy and constructive manner.

- Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
- Certification: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
- BLS Certification required.
Schedule
This position follows day shifts, Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
