About the role

We are seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to assist Eye Center physicians and technical support personnel in performing diagnostic tests for patient eye problems. This role performs basic ophthalmic testing procedures and supports both clinical and clerical functions within Duke Eye Center at Erwin Rd.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, and simple color vision tests.
  • Direct patient flow; obtain medical and personal data for patient charts; screen patients for conditions; arrange for laboratory tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, patient admissions, and surgery as requested by the physician.
  • Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
  • Administer dilation or anesthetic drops or assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.
  • Alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and treatment methods.
  • Complete stocking and maintenance functions and maintain the physical environment of exam and procedure rooms.
  • Perform clerical functions, including assisting with appointments, telephone call screening, and filing test results, forms, and letters into medical records.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Certification for Ophthalmic Assistants by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • 2 years of directly related experience working for an Ophthalmologist.
  • BLS Certification.

Schedule

Day shifts, Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
