Ophthalmic Assistant Certified

About the Role

Under the direction of practice providers, responsible for clinical duties such as obtaining medical records, preparing the patient for the exam, beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements, performing preliminary eye function testing, explaining medication or procedures to patients, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms and supplies at an outpatient care site. Also responsible for some administrative duties in conjunction with patient contact.

Responsibilities

• Obtain medical records and prepare patients for exams
• Perform standard tests and measurements, including preliminary eye function testing
• Explain medications or procedures to patients
• Sterilize and clean equipment
• Maintain examination rooms and supplies
• Perform administrative duties related to patient contact
• Report patient care observations, deviations from the patient’s plan of care, and other pertinent information under direct supervision

Requirements

• High School graduate or equivalent
• Coursework in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology/Biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Completion of an Ophthalmic Assistant program or other Health Science degree program preferred
• 1 year of experience, preferably in a physician practice or outpatient clinic setting involving patient contact
• BLS Certification through American Heart Association within a month of hire
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 18 months of hire, or current COA from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)

Skills

• Willingness and ability to perform self-study and online training for completion of Ophthalmic Assistant program
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Moderate knowledge of basic computer skills
• Strong knowledge of Medical Terminology

Pay

$20.27 - $29.96 per hour
