Operator, Take Up I

The College Programs at Southwire provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher, offering meaningful, project-based work that complements classroom learning. Students receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it at a project expo at the end.
About the role
The Take Up 1 is an entry-level role focused on rewinding material to specified lengths while performing spark testing. Responsibilities include stripping PVC and nylon insulation from copper and aluminum wire for recycling at the Carrollton or Kentucky Rod Mills.
Responsibilities
- Run a specified package length.
- Set and maintain proper spark-tester settings.
- Tag and package product according to specifications.
- Produce a quality product through visual checks and adherence to standards.
- Perform wire painting, print removal, or reprinting during rewinding as needed.
- Make quality patches on defective material when required.
- Strip insulation off scrap wire.
- Perform all other assigned duties.
Cross Training
- Train on equipment within your identified workgroup at the facility.
- Fill in for more complex positions during absences or vacancies after training.
- Rotate within your workgroup on a set frequency to maintain skill proficiency.
Quality
- Do not release products until all quality checks are passed.
- Perform quality checks and minor maintenance as outlined in process procedures.
- Report quality issues immediately to a supervisor or quality manager.
- Use Southwire’s ISO Quality System documentation to guide daily quality activities.
Safety
- Follow all Southwire safety rules and maintain good housekeeping.
- Adhere to all safety procedures and wear required PPE.
- Review Job Hazard Analyses for proper job sequences and associated hazards.
- Review Safety Data Sheets for assigned jobs.
- Maintain work areas to 5S standards.
- Perform pre-operation safety inspections and hazard analyses.
- Follow all company environmental rules and handle materials to minimize environmental impact.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English; bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
- Ability to stand and lift heavy loads for extended periods.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
Physical/Environmental Demands
- Work in hot and cold environments typical of a non-climate-controlled prefabricated building.
- Physical activities include: balance, climbing, fingering, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, stooping, walking, and sitting.
