About the role

As a system planning engineer at ERCOT, you will collaborate with a dynamic team to shape the future of the Texas power grid and wholesale market. You will leverage the latest technologies and resources to develop innovative solutions for today's and tomorrow's energy challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Enter a collaborative environment to influence and shape the future design of the electric power grid.
  • Develop and perform steady-state and dynamic contingency analyses using power system simulation models (PSSE, VSAT, or TSAT).
  • Implement appropriate system modeling, develop tools and procedures to monitor and control the system, and perform system stability assessments.
  • Analyze simulated or actual operating results and develop solutions to current or future system stability issues.
  • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Structure appropriate stability studies to determine system operating limits.
  • Assist in the preparation of study reports and procedures for ERCOT management, NERC, and other entities.
  • Review stakeholder reports to ensure appropriate technical content and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree: Electrical Engineering or related field (Required)
  • Master's or PhD Degree: Electrical Engineering or related field (Preferred)
  • Engineer 3: Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role.
  • Senior Level Engineer: Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role within the electric utility industry.

Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in the dynamic modeling of power systems, especially inverter-based resources deployed in solar, wind, and battery plants.
  • Experience performing large-scale dynamic stability analyses using power system simulation tools (TSAT, PSSE etc.).
  • Experience evaluating and updating power system dynamic models, especially inverter-based resources models.
  • Experience programming and developing simulation automation tools (Python).
  • Experience assisting in the development of improvements to transmission planning processes and familiarity with NERC reliability standards.

Skills

  • Expertise in power system software applications and tools, spreadsheet programs, and database programs.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Strong working relationships with team and other internal departments.
  • Mentorship and guidance for less experienced engineers/analysts.
  • Leadership and coordination in multifunctional teams.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and industry best practices.

Pay

$87,000 - $120,000

Schedule

There are requirements in this role that will be required to be performed on-site. It is estimated that your business area will require this position to be on-site at least (2) days per week. Circumstances and business needs may require you to be on-site more often. On-site requirements are at the discretion of Management. Remote work schedules shall be performed within Texas. Log-ins during out of state business travel, and any temporary remote work arrangements that have been submitted and approved in Workday by HR.
