Duties And Responsibilities

  • Captures and maintains accurate records, logs, and reports for regulatory compliance and internal tracking.
  • Operates and maintains the wastewater treatment process, including influent pumping, primary/secondary treatment, disinfection, and sludge handling.
  • Assists in inventory control and procurement of equipment, supplies, and chemicals.
  • Coordinates daily and weekly sampling schedules for process control and compliance monitoring.
  • Performs process control testing on plant samples.
  • Prepares required reports.
  • Serves as a backup operator in Responsible Charge (BORC) as needed.
  • Maintains process control parameters using SCADA and field instrumentation.
  • Serves as a backup laboratory analyst.
  • Trains and mentors junior staff.
  • Participates in emergency response.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of chemical, physical, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater.
  • Thorough knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local wastewater treatment and laboratory regulations.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in SCADA systems, CMMS platforms, and Microsoft Office.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience in municipal or industrial wastewater treatment, laboratory operations, wastewater system inspection, or related experience, with two years in a lead or supervisory role.

Special Certifications And Licenses

  • Valid NC Driver’s license.
  • Grade IV NC Biological Water Pollution Control Operator certification.

Physical Demands

  • Standing, walking, and climbing stairs regularly.
  • Using hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Reaching with hands and arms.
  • Lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.

  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
  • Exposure to toxic and hazardous chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes and airborne particles.
  • Risk of electrical shock.
