Under the direction of nursing leadership, the Health Unit Coordinator facilitates unit organization and patient care by assisting in the coordination of patient, nursing, physician, and other healthcare provider office and clerical activities. This position works in partnership with the Charge Nurse to support day-to-day Operating Room operations and maintain efficient workflow.
Responsibilities
- Patient Care Support:
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients
- Answers patient call lights
- Schedules tests and treatments
- Provides access control to visitor entrance on secure units
- Performs telemetry duties
- May deliver medications from the delivery system to the RN
- Clerical Support:
- Answers unit telephones and disseminates information appropriately
- Processes, organizes, files, and maintains patient and unit records
- Transcribes physician orders
- Acts as unit receptionist
- May organize, stock, and maintain supplies on the unit
- Collaboration and Customer Service:
- Performs functions delegated by the nursing manager and charge nurse
- Demonstrates effective teamwork, prioritization, communication, and organization
- Provides excellent customer service when responding to patient/family requests, physicians, nursing, and other ancillary services

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated clerical or customer service experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a secretary in a hospital setting
- Previous experience using electronic medical records (EMR)
- Experience using word processing software
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Strong experience with OR scheduling
- Strong computer skills
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies
- Frequent interactions requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations
- Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, and medication preparation
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, including bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment (items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items)
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment (including heavy items)
- Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles
Schedule
- Twelve-hour shifts, rotating days: 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM
- Scheduled weekly hours: 36
Pay
Hourly range: $18.40 - $23.92 (actual rate dependent upon experience)
