About the role
The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) is sought to provide high-quality perioperative care at the Atlanta VA Health System. The position involves surgical patient care, operating room duties, and post-anesthesia care unit responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Surgical Patient Care: Provide comprehensive pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia care providers, and the surgical team.
- Operating Room Duties: Scrub and circulate during surgical procedures, demonstrate proper aseptic techniques, operate and manage OR table and lights, assist anesthesiologists as needed, position patients, conduct sponge counts, and complete surgical worksheets.
- PACU: Provide post-anesthesia care, monitor patients' vital signs and recovery progress, administer medications, and provide emergency care as needed.
- Equipment and Safety: Use and maintain OR mechanical equipment, check emergency supplies and equipment, practice good body mechanics, and use safety protective devices to prevent injury.
- Documentation and Communication: Complete and accurately document surgical procedures and patient care, communicate effectively with patients, families, and the surgical team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensure: Current, unrestricted RN license from any state in the United States.
- Certification: Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate accredited by the American Heart Association, and Current Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (ACLS) certificate accredited by the American Heart Association.
- Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of current experience in an operating room setting, exclusive of agency assignments. Must have worked within the last six (6) months in an operating room setting.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred, or Associate’s Degree or diploma educational level with a valid license and current experience.
- Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
- Proper Skills: Proficiency in scrub and circulating duties for various types of surgeries, strong clinical skills in operating room and PACU settings, excellent documentation and communication abilities, ability to provide psychological support and handle emergency situations effectively, and team-oriented with a focus on collaborative patient care.
Desired Qualifications
- Preferred Certification: Current Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certificate accredited by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).
