Responsibilities

Install, service, and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, and related environmental-control systems. Utilize knowledge of heating and refrigeration theory, and pipefitting.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Advanced troubleshooting and repair: Diagnosing complex HVAC system malfunctions, identifying root causes, and implementing repairs on critical cooling equipment like chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, and precision cooling systems within data centers.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Performing comprehensive scheduled maintenance tasks to ensure optimal system performance, including cleaning, inspecting, calibrating, and replacing components as needed, while adhering to strict data center maintenance protocols.
  • System Optimization: Analyzing data center cooling loads, identifying efficiency improvements, and implementing changes to optimize system performance, potentially including adjustments to control systems or equipment upgrades.
  • Technical Leadership: Acting as a subject matter expert for HVAC systems within the data center, providing guidance and training to other technicians on complex issues.
  • Documentation And Reporting: Maintaining detailed records of maintenance activities, system performance data, and any issues encountered, including creating reports for management.

Requirements

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • Extensive HVAC knowledge: Minimum of 4-6 years of experience as an HVAC technician.
  • Deep understanding of commercial HVAC principles, including refrigeration cycles and air flow dynamics.
  • Specific expertise: Thorough knowledge of data center cooling requirements, critical infrastructure, and potential environmental hazards.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting Skills: The ability to diagnose complex system malfunctions and identify root causes with minimal downtime.
  • Control System Proficiency: Expertise in programming and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS) commonly used in data centers.
  • Strong Mechanical Aptitude: Capability to perform hands-on maintenance and repairs on a wide range of HVAC equipment.
  • Safety Awareness: Commitment to following strict safety protocols within a data center environment.

Skills

Class 4 Service Technician skills include:

  • Trouble shooting and repairs on all types of air-cooled chillers, pumps, and low-pressure boilers.
  • Advanced troubleshooting on all air-cooled equipment, both unitary and chilled water.
  • Basic understanding of water-cooled chillers.
  • Basic understanding of DDC control systems.
  • Capable of maintaining and repairing cooling towers.
  • Ability to diagnose water flow issues.
  • Proficient with variable frequency drives and starters.
  • Proficient with low pressure boilers.

Class 5 Service Technician skills include all of the above, plus:

  • Understanding of water-cooled chillers, chilled water systems, large chiller rebuilds, rigging, large boilers, pumps, and assist with technical support to other technicians.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair large, water-cooled chillers.
  • Diagnose issues on large boilers with power burners.
  • Advanced diagnosis of air distribution systems (VAV/PIU).
  • Chilled water system distribution and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot and repair/rebuild large pumps.
  • Possess superior system knowledge and advanced troubleshooting skills.

Pay

The pay range for this role extends from $36-46/hr based on skill-set and experience.

Schedule

This role is on-site with a client in Richmond, VA.

Physical demands include:

  • Must be able to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 or more pounds, distinguish colors for electrical work and tolerate confined spaces.
  • Work will involve heights and seasonal temperature extremes.
