Oncology Infusion Pharmacist

About the role

The Infusion Pharmacist III is responsible for the oversight of the preparation and compounding, order verification, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals according to the laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy within oncology or sterile compounding. The role focuses on optimizing drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug-related problems and adverse drug events. The Infusion Pharmacist III practices in advanced areas, working directly with providers or in specialty areas such as pediatrics or the New Drug Discovery Center.

Responsibilities

• Practice in accordance with all federal and state regulations, DFCI policies, and Joint Commission standards.
• Oversee designated daily operations and/or clinical activities of assigned area.
• Appropriately dispense pharmaceuticals, including sterile products, chemotherapy, biologics, controlled substances, and investigational medications.
• Evaluate all providers’ medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing; consult with providers and nurses to clarify orders as needed.
• Perform quality control on medication orders, prepared medications, and additional quality control activities (e.g., refrigerator temperature, compounding logs, hood cleaning, emergency cart, and controlled substance inventory).
• Review and compare investigational protocols to medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing.
• Oversee pharmacy technicians and students as assigned.
• Participate in the training and orientation of newly hired pharmacists and technicians.
• Provide contributions to training, education, and multi-disciplinary activities.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy.
• 5 years of hospital pharmacy, ambulatory care, or sterile compounding experience with 4 years of oncology experience required.
• Completion of a PGY2 oncology residency or relevant PGY2 specialty may substitute for experience.
• Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Some satellite locations require additional licensure.
• Board Certification related to the area of practice is preferred.

Special Working Conditions

• Routine, direct exposure to chemotherapeutic agents, biologic agents, investigational agents, gene therapy, and potentially dangerous and flammable chemicals.
• Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
• Potential for exposure to infectious patients and/or materials.
• Rotating shifts required (not open weekends/evenings).

Pay

$150,000.00 - $170,000.00
